A Place to Reconnect with Yourself
I’m Sophia Sutherlun, a trauma-informed Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and EMDRIA Certified Therapist. I empower adults over 18 to reconnect with their whole selves - body, mind, soul, spirit - so they can experience the freedom they have been looking for.
I specialize in helping adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties, attachment wounds, and major life transitions. I am a certified EMDR therapist, and am trained in Internal Family Systems, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, strength-based, and compassion-based therapy approaches. I offer in-person therapy appointments for adults in Central Texas out of my office in downtown San Marcos and virtual therapy for anyone in Texas.
You Make Sense Here
I help women and men to not be afraid of their strongest emotions and embrace their hopes and fears as the teachers they are. Through the experience of sharing space and being in relationship with one another week after week, I attune to your needs and the subtleties of who you are and where you’ve come from. This helps me provide insight about how you came to be where you are and to reflect back to you your goodness, deservingness and the reality of your present safety. I see the process of healing as a sacred vocation that is one of my greatest joys to participate in.
My Counseling Journey
I’m a California native who came to be a psychotherapist on a winding route that took me from studying human biology at Stanford University, to grant writing in Washington, D.C., to a Master of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin, to some years of being home with young kiddos, to teaching yoga, to participating on boards, all with the backdrop of going through my own healing journey. I’ve experienced devastating aha moments, world-changing betrayals, and the slog of working for years to undo my past patterns. My own healing journey has taught me that insight alone isn't enough. Lasting change happens through safe relationships, compassionate curiosity, and learning to reconnect with our whole selves - body, mind and soul. I did not know who I was for a long time and still surprise myself sometimes. I’ve had great therapists and terrible therapists and am still learning to trust my body and inner parts as the sources of my greatest healing and strength. It’s a beautiful, painful life we are living and I am a fellow traveler with you on the journey.
You’ll find me happiest at the ocean or on the river, embracing my wildness in the desert and hiking in the mountains. I’m an avid reader and love trying new types of workouts. I love my two daughters and my partner, who are some of my greatest teachers.
Therapy Approach
I know trying again with a new therapist, or finding one for the first time, is scary and vulnerable and wrapped up in hope that maybe things can change and deep fear that nothing ever will. I’ve helped a lot of people who feel stuck and exhausted find a soft place to land. I’ve surprised a lot of people with the ease they can find in their healing - you don’t have to muscle through the pain anymore. And I’ve empowered a lot of people to reconnect with their own power and be delighted by the freedom and joy that is on the other side of shame. I can’t promise change will happen overnight, but I know it’s possible. A few of my therapy approaches include:
Trauma Informed Therapy
EMDR Therapy
Internal Family Systems
Psychodynamic Therapy
Healing doesn't happen by becoming someone new—it begins by reconnecting with who you've always been.
Beginning therapy can feel intimidating, but you don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out. Whether you're returning to therapy or taking the first step, I'd be honored to meet you where you are.
If you're ready, I'm here.
